Now that I've had the opportunity to work as both a UX/PM and a UX/Designer, I see the benefits of both. Here's a quick comparison and my personal recommendation:
UX/PM
- works well in an agency environment to help reduce headcount in client meetings
- works best in environments where the process has been set so I can run though a quick checklist to fulfill the PM role
- works best for in-house teams
- can be boiled down to a comp that gets passed around the office and sticky-noted for functionality
- One person sets goals, does user research, sitemap, and wireframe
- Second person adds the look-and-feel and fresh set of eyes
